Helpful Techniques

Power Searching with Google taught me many quick and easy ways to find information through Google. This will help me with many things considering I use Google everyday. I mostly use Google for school work to look up information on certain topics, but I also use it for everyday information. Now that I know word order matters when asking a query through Google, I will get better results from just changing around or deleting words. When getting better results, I will be getting as specific information as possible about what I'm asking just because I simply changed a few words. Another way to narrow down your search is by using Control-F. Once I find a website I want to look at I can hit Control-F in order to look for specific words. I can then highlight the words making it stand out every time it's talked about. This makes finding information a lot quicker and easier. Those techniques can be used every day along with programs such as Google Books and Google Translate. Google Books is an easy way to find any book online. You may just want to read the book or look up a quick summary. Also, Google Translate can easily change anything you type into a different language of your choice. These things can be helpful for travel, school work or may just interest you. These searching techniques are only a small part of the Power Searching with Google program. There are many more in order to help you find your information quickly and easily.

Power Searching with Google

In Computer Applications class the past few days we have been learning many new techniques to searching on Google. These skills will be very helpful to me outside this classroom when I am trying to work on class projects or simply trying to learn something new outside of school. Two techniques that really stood out to me are the Control-F and filetype sources.
Control-F is used when you are trying to really narrow down the information you are looking for. First, you search your query and pick whatever webpage you think will help you the most. Once you are on that webpage you can hit Control-F on your keyboard and a small box will appear in one of the corners of the screen depending on what browser you are using. You then have an area where you can type in a word that you are looking for. You have the option of hitting next, previous or highlight all in order to find the information you're looking for. An example of this would be me searching 2014 Olympics. I clicked on a webpage and then hit Control-F. When I hit Control-F I typed in hockey and clicked highlight all. As I scrolled through the page I quickly found what I was looking for because the word was highlighted everywhere it was talked about. This is a helpful way to quickly and easily find the information you are looking for.
Filetype is used when you are trying to limit your results to certain kinds of files and documents. All kinds of documents have different extensions to their names. Some examples are flash file's extension is SWF and Excel file's extension is XLS. If you were trying to find an Excel file on death rates in the United States you would simply type in, death rate United States filetype:xls. This would only give you results of Excel Files. This source really helps when you are looking for specific information. It takes you to exactly what you are looking for rather than having to search through a bunch of different results.
Power Searching with Google has taught me a lot in order to find the information I'm looking for a lot quicker and easier.Control-F and filetype are extremely helpful but there are many more helpful techniques. This is a great way to quickly learn techniques that will help you many different ways, not just school.

More Than A Game

Hockey is more than a game of competition. It teaches people how to have fun while competing, to work hard and the game builds character among the athletes. Hockey is extremely competitive, but that's what makes it fun. When you finally beat a team, score a goal or even make an amazing save that's when you realize why you play the game. By the time game day comes you are ready to go out on the ice and do whatever you can to win the game because you have practiced day in and day out. If you aren't practicing you are playing. That's just how hockey is. Most importantly, hockey players learn very quickly that having a good character is one of the most important things for an athlete. You learn to have no ego because you may win one game, but the next time you play that team it could be a whole different story. There's also a lot of contact in hockey and you need to learn to take the hit and move on. If there is ever an injury on the ice it is known how important it is to respect that player because one day that could be you. At the end of the game no matter what the outcome is you respect the other team by shaking their hand and telling them good game. We push ourselves until we can't breathe, skate until we can't feel our legs, get knocked down a hundred times, but we always get up because we love the game of hockey.
